How to Help Your Parrot During a Severe Storm or Hurricane

Thankfully, we can forecast the weather ahead of time thanks to weather networks, allowing us to prepare for potential severe storms and hurricanes. Unlike us, our captive birds cannot sense the weather. It is our responsibility to keep them safe during storms or hurricanes. When you notice a storm approaching, ensure you have emergency food and carriers ready to go in case evacuation is necessary. Contact your local animal shelter or avian veterinarian to confirm if they offer shelter for your parrots during emergencies and to understand their policies.

Some veterinarians, including my own, require first-time clients to have a general checkup to establish baseline information regarding diet, husbandry, and care before an emergency arises. In some cases, boarding your pet at a veterinary clinic may not be possible. It is advisable to check in advance if motels or hotels in your area allow pets, should evacuation become necessary.

During severe storms, loud thunder and lightning can often frighten your bird. Keep your bird away from windows and inside their cage. If your bird is scared by thunder or storms, try covering the cage to help them feel more secure. Flashing lightning may startle your bird, potentially causing injury. Closing curtains can help minimise harsh flashes of lightning coming through.

During a hurricane, one of the biggest concerns for parrots is the lack of clean water. If you live in a hurricane- or flood-prone area, it is wise to keep bottled water on hand. Additionally, if evacuation is necessary, ensure your bird receives a health check once conditions return to normal. Health checks are crucial anytime pets are exposed to others with unknown health statuses.

Being well-prepared during storms or hurricanes is essential. The last thing you want is a panicking owner and a stressed parrot.
