Cuttlebone: What is it?

Cuttlebone: What is it?

Cuttlebone, also known as cuttlefish bone, is commonly found in most parrot cages and bird stores. But what exactly is a cuttlebone?

Cuttlebones are not actually bones but rather the internal shell of a cuttlefish. A cuttlebone is filled with gases and helps control the fish’s buoyancy in the water. While cuttlebones have been used for various purposes, their most widely recognised use is as a supplement for birds. Most people know that calcium builds strong bones, but it’s important to understand that this applies to birds as well.

Cuttlebones are an excellent source of essential minerals and calcium, making them a popular choice for parrots. Additionally, the act of nibbling or playing with a cuttlebone helps trim and polish your bird’s beak. It can also help remove any flaky outer layers.

There are different ways to add a cuttlebone to your bird’s cage. If the cuttlebone you purchase comes with clips, you can attach it to the side of the cage. My preferred method is using zip ties to hang the cuttlebone. It’s best not to place the cuttlebone below the cage.

If you notice your bird is not interested in its cuttlebone, another method is to break or blend small pieces and add them to its food. You can also get creative—some perches and toys include cuttlebone as part of their design.

Do cuttlebones have an expiration date?
Cuttlebones do not have a strict expiration date because they are natural mineral sources. However, they can degrade over time, especially if exposed to moisture, dirt, or excessive handling. To keep a cuttlebone fresh and safe for your bird, store it in a dry, clean place and replace it if you notice signs of mould, discolouration, or crumbling.
