Cuttlebone: What is it?

Cuttlebone: What is it?

Cuttlebone, also referred to as cuttlefish bone, is what you see in most parrot cages and bird stores. But what exactly is a cuttlebone?

Cuttlebones are not actually bone but rather the internal shell from a cuttlefish. A cuttlebone is filled with gasses and helps control the fish's buoyancy in the water. Many people used cuttlebones for various purposes, but the most widely recognized use of a cuttlebone is a supplement for birds. Most people have heard that calcium builds strong bones, but it's important to realize that the same applies to birds.
Cuttlebones are an excellent source of necessary minerals and calcium, so it's often used for parrots. Additionally, the act of playing or nibbling at a cuttlebone helps trim down and polishes your bird's beak. It can also help remove any flaky outer layers of your bird's beak.
There are different ways in which you can use to add cuttlebone to your bird's cage. If the cuttlebone you purchased comes with a set of clips, you can attach it to the side of their cage. My preferred method is using zip ties to hang my cuttlebone. It's best not to attach the cuttlebone below the cage.
If you notice your bird not being interested in its cuttlebone, another method you can try is breaking (or blending) bits and adding them to its food. You can also find a more creative way to provide your bird with cuttlebone. Some many perches and toys also have cuttlebone in them.
